Not medical advice. This is general information. For anything involving prescription treatment, a changing mole, or a scalp condition, talk to a doctor or dermatologist.
If you’re bald, your scalp is exposed to the sun every time you walk outside, and it adds up. Skin cancer on the scalp is well documented, it’s easy to miss because you can’t see the top of your own head, and a sunburned scalp is miserable. The cheapest, most effective thing you can do for a bald head is protect it.
What to buy
- Broad-spectrum. This means it protects against both UVA and UVB.
- SPF 30 or higher. Dermatology groups commonly recommend this as the minimum for daily use.
- A feel you’ll actually wear. The best sunscreen is the one you’ll put on every day. Gel, lotion and stick formulas all work; pick the one that doesn’t leave your head glossy or sting your eyes when you sweat.
- Water-resistant if you sweat, run or swim. Note that “water-resistant” is time-limited, usually 40 or 80 minutes.
How to use it
- Apply generously. Most people use far too little. Cover the whole scalp, including the back of the head, the tops of the ears and the back of the neck.
- Put it on 15 minutes before going out.
- Reapply roughly every two hours when you’re outside, and sooner after sweating or swimming.
- Don’t forget the hairline and the temples, where sunscreen runs off first.
Sunscreen sticks are handy for reapplying without wrecking your hands, and some men keep one in the car.
When sunscreen isn’t enough
Sunscreen is one layer. For long days outdoors, pair it with a hat (see our guide to hats) and shade. And have a doctor check your scalp, ears and neck during your annual skin check, since you can’t see most of it yourself. A spot that bleeds, crusts or changes shape deserves a visit.
Moisturize too
Your scalp skin dries out, especially after shaving. A plain fragrance-free moisturizer at night helps with flaking and tightness. You don’t need a “bald head” branded product; a basic lotion from the drugstore does the job.
