The Best Sunscreen for Your Bald Head (and How to Use It)

Your scalp takes more sun than almost any other part of your body. Here's what to look for in a sunscreen, how often to reapply, and three solid picks.

Not medical advice. This is general information. For anything involving prescription treatment, a changing mole, or a scalp condition, talk to a doctor or dermatologist.

If you’re bald, your scalp is exposed to the sun every time you walk outside, and it adds up. Skin cancer on the scalp is well documented, it’s easy to miss because you can’t see the top of your own head, and a sunburned scalp is miserable. The cheapest, most effective thing you can do for a bald head is protect it.

What to buy

How to use it

  1. Apply generously. Most people use far too little. Cover the whole scalp, including the back of the head, the tops of the ears and the back of the neck.
  2. Put it on 15 minutes before going out.
  3. Reapply roughly every two hours when you’re outside, and sooner after sweating or swimming.
  4. Don’t forget the hairline and the temples, where sunscreen runs off first.

Sunscreen sticks are handy for reapplying without wrecking your hands, and some men keep one in the car.

When sunscreen isn’t enough

Sunscreen is one layer. For long days outdoors, pair it with a hat (see our guide to hats) and shade. And have a doctor check your scalp, ears and neck during your annual skin check, since you can’t see most of it yourself. A spot that bleeds, crusts or changes shape deserves a visit.

Moisturize too

Your scalp skin dries out, especially after shaving. A plain fragrance-free moisturizer at night helps with flaking and tightness. You don’t need a “bald head” branded product; a basic lotion from the drugstore does the job.
