When you’re bald, glasses do a lot of work. Hair no longer frames your face, so the frames become the main feature around your eyes. That is an opportunity: the right pair makes you look sharp, and the wrong pair makes your head look larger and your face smaller.
Pick the frame by face shape
| Face shape | Frames that work |
|---|---|
| Round | Angular or rectangular frames that add structure |
| Square | Rounder or oval frames that soften the jaw |
| Oval | Most shapes; try bolder frames |
| Long | Taller frames, and wider ones with deeper lenses |
Four rules that matter most
- Size. Frames should be about as wide as the widest part of your face, and should not sit past your cheekbones. Too small makes the head look big.
- Weight of the frame. A thicker or darker frame adds contrast against a bald head. Very thin metal frames can disappear and make your face look bare.
- Color. Dark tortoiseshell, black and dark brown are safe. Lighter or colored frames suit a bolder look.
- Brow line. Choose frames whose top edge follows or sits just under your eyebrows. Frames that cut across the brow look off.
Sunglasses
Sunglasses protect your eyes and the thin skin around them from UV. Look for lenses that block 100% of UVA and UVB (often labeled UV400), and a frame that wraps enough to cut light at the sides. Pair them with a hat and sunscreen. See our hat guide.
Fit tips
- Check the nose bridge. Glasses slide more easily on a bald head if the temples are smooth. If yours slip, ask an optician to adjust the arms.
- Try before you buy, or use a brand with free returns.
- Own two pairs. One everyday and one with more personality gets you more looks for little extra spend.
One more thing
Glasses and a beard together are a strong look; see beard styles for bald men. Keep the frame and beard in balance: thick frames suit a fuller beard, lighter frames suit a short one.
